about
The Messy Formist is a design-led object studio creating functional forms to support focus, routine, and intentional daily living.
Founded by Courtney Westbrook, TMF sits at the intersection of design, making, and lived experience with a busy brain and sensory sensitivities.
This is not décor for display. It is design for use.
Why TMF Exists
I created The Messy Formist because I needed it. Focus does not come easily, and my routines do not hold without support. Over time, I realised this wasn’t a discipline or procrastination problem. It was a design problem. My environment mattered more than my willpower.
I am also highly sensitive to synthetic fragrance. Many candles and homewares trigger headaches and sensitivities, making products that were meant to feel calming completely unusable. I wanted objects that helped me begin, focus, and enjoy completing my tasks, without overwhelming my body or my space.
I couldn’t find what I needed. So, I started making them.
Built Through Making
Before TMF, I spent years working hands on across creative disciplines.
I trained in design and interior architecture, learning how form, proportion, and structure shape experience. I work in film and stop-motion animation, building miniatures, sculpted puppets, sets, and objects by hand.
Making has always been iterative for me. Test, adjust, focus, and refine. TMF grew naturally from this process.
Objects as Support
At TMF, objects are treated as active participants in daily life.
Candles and forms are designed to act as physical cues to:
- begin work
- sustain focus
- pause between tasks
- mark an ending
Lighting a candle becomes a signal to start. Extinguishing it becomes permission to pause.
The object does the work, not your brain.
Designed for Sensory Comfort
TMF is informed by lived experience with fragrance sensitivity.
This means:
- essential oils instead of synthetic toxic fragrance
- restrained scent designed for repeat use
- materials chosen for comfort
If an object causes discomfort, it cannot support focus. That principle guides every design decision at TMF.
