sustainability
Sustainability at The Messy Formist is treated as a design constraint.
Every object is designed with the understanding that materials, health, longevity, and use are inseparable. If a product compromises wellbeing or relies on excess, it does not belong here.
TMF does not aim to be perfect. It aims to be considered, transparent, and responsible.
Designed with limits
Sustainability at TMF begins before anything is made.
Design decisions are shaped by constraints:
- what materials are safe to live and work with repeatedly
- what production methods prioritise health and longevity
- what packaging is necessary, and what can be removed
These limits shape the object. They are not added afterward. TMF avoids sustainability as visual language or marketing shorthand.
Materials chosen for use
TMF uses:
- organic soy wax
- cotton wicks
- essential oils only. No synthetic fragrance
Scent is treated as a functional element, not an intensity feature. Materials are chosen to minimise sensory overload and support repeat use. If an object triggers discomfort, it cannot support focus.
Made slowly, with care
TMF objects are:
- hand-sculpted
- produced in small batches
- iterated rather than rushed
Slow production is not a limitation. It is a deliberate choice that prioritises material integrity, and consistency.
TMF does not produce at a speed that compromises health, quality, or decision-making.
Packaging as part of the object
Packaging is designed to:
- protect the object
- minimise waste
- avoid unnecessary layers
TMF prioritises recyclable and reusable materials and avoids packaging that exists only to create a sense of “luxury”.
The goal is to deliver the object safely, not theatrically.
What we don’t do
TMF does not:
- claim perfection
- use vague eco-language
- rely on certifications without context
- treat sustainability as an aesthetic
Ongoing commitment
Sustainability at TMF is something to be practiced consistently. Design that supports life must respect the body, the environment, and the time it takes to do things properly.

When we know better, we do better.
Thank you for your support.
